At the September team meeting, the B Corp committee collected several questions from Evergreeners. The committee plans to address those questions over a series of newsletter articles, with this being the first in the series of responses.

  • What is the Layman’s definition of B Corp?
From B Lab (the non-profit that invented and certifies B Corps): B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.
From Eric: B Corps go through an independent verification to prove that they are working to do business differently. This includes focusing on employee, environmental, and social health. By taking these steps to be independently reviewed Evergreen can ensure its values are solidified now and into the future.

  • What do you think are the main advantages for an employee of working for a B Corp?
Key advantages to working for a B Corp is knowing that the company’s ownership is dedicated, and willing to have a third-party verify, that they are taking measures to provide the best experience to its employees, having a positive impact on the communities they live and work in, and that it is mitigating negative environmental impacts the company may be making. All of this can lead to a better place to work and knowing that the work the company is doing is focused on making positive impacts in the world – using business as a force for good.

  • How can I get involved?
We’re glad you asked! The B Corp committee is looking to add another member or two to join us. The committee meets monthly and discusses how we can continue to push new efforts and initiatives at Evergreen that positively impact our team members, the communities we live and work in, and the environment. Regular newsletters and podcasts are a big part of planning efforts, but we are also interested in other areas we can provide value and input to the company. One example is the volunteer program that was launched in 2023. That started with the B Corp Committee! If you’re interested in joining the committee, please touch base with your supervisor and if they’re on board, reach out to Eric to learn more.

Does joining the committee sound like too much of a commitment? We are also looking for individuals to support in other ways. You could write an article about a topic you’re passionate about, share info about your favorite B Corps, or otherwise offer your expertise to our efforts.
