Lauren Morlino, who lives in Colchester, VT, a community with households spanning the socio-economic spectrum, recently started lending her expertise to the Colchester Conservation Commission and utilizing the hours allotted to her via Evergreen’s volunteer policy to do so. The Commission is concerned with the public awareness, education, and preservation of Colchester’s natural areas; water quality of rivers, ponds, and Lake Champlain; wildlife habitats; and beautification of the Town.
Morlino got involved with the commission by attending meetings, then was appointed to an official position as member, where she hopes to lend her energy expertise when the opportunities arise. In her duties, Morlino will join monthly commission meetings and participate in various events throughout the year.
Most recently, the commission has worked on pulling invasive plant species from sensitive wetland and other areas, maintained storm water drains in the community, and cleaned up illegal dump sites.
“I enjoy having a role where I feel like I am contributing to the community I live in and am excited about the opportunities that the commission offers me to make a positive impact in Colchester,” said Morlino. “The fact that Evergreen is paying me for some of the time I spend on the commission is an added benefit. Colchester has a goal of producing 100% of the municipal services’ energy needs from local, renewable sources. With a growing population and important wildlife areas to protect, the Colchester community shares my passion for environmental stewardship and I’m proud to give back.”
